FAQ's

Start by consulting the BERNINA Presser Feet Quick Reference Guide, which details compatibility across models, and understand the numbering and lettering system: standard feet (with no letter) are designed for machines with a CB Hook and a maximum stitch width of 5.5mm (though they can also work with 9mm machines when needed), "C" feet are coded for rotary hook systems that support 9mm stitch widths through a sensor mechanism, and "D" feet are tailored for models with a Dual Feed feature; additionally, knowing your machine's series and stitch width—whether it's a 5.5mm or a 9mm machine—is crucial, and additionally presser feet from vintage styles with engraved numbers or old style feet marked by black numbers on a white background to new style feet that feature red numbers, all of which helps ensure you select the correct foot.

The key difference between BERNINA’s snap-on and screw-on presser feet is how they attach to the machine, impacting stability and suitability for different sewing tasks. Snap-on feet quickly clip onto a compatible shank, making them easy to swap without tools—perfect for general sewing and sewists who frequently change feet. However, they are less stable, making them less ideal for heavy-duty projects. In contrast, screw-on feet attach securely with a screw, ensuring maximum stability and precision, making them the preferred choice for embroidery, quilting, and heavy-duty sewing. Most high-end BERNINA machines use screw-on feet for durability and precision, so if you need quick changes for everyday sewing, snap-on feet may work, but for professional-grade results, screw-on feet are the superior option.

Not all BERNINA presser feet are interchangeable due to variations in machine design, stitch width, and technology. Vintage models, such as the 530 to 900 series, use a 2-point shank opening for a secure fit and typically support a 4.5 mm stitch width. Modern BERNINA machines have a closed shank opening and are further classified by stitch width and additional features.

To ensure the correct presser foot selection, always refer to the user manual, consult a BERNINA dealer, and test on scrap fabric before sewing. Understanding these distinctions allows sewists to maximize precision and functionality in their projects

Yes, utilizing BERNINA presser feet can significantly improve sewing accuracy and stitch quality as they’re designed to provide stability, precision and ensure optimal fabric handling during various sewing tasks. BERNINA offers a diverse range of presser feet tailored for specific applications, allowing sewists to achieve professional results across different projects

To install a BERNINA presser foot, first, raise the needle to its highest position and lift the presser foot lever. Position the presser foot beneath the machine’s shank, aligning its pin with the clamp. Slowly lower the presser foot lever until the foot clicks into place, ensuring a secure attachment. To remove the presser foot, raise the needle fully and lift the presser foot lever. Press the release button on the presser foot holder, then gently lift the presser foot away from the shank.

After each sewing session, detach the presser foot and use a soft brush or lint-free cloth to remove lint, dust, or fabric residues that could affect stitch quality. For a deeper clean, wash the presser foot in warm, soapy water, scrubbing gently with a soft brush, then rinse and dry thoroughly to prevent rust. Over time, metal presser feet may develop tarnish—polish them with a microfiber cloth or a safe metal polish. While most presser feet don’t require lubrication, those with moving parts, like walking feet, may benefit from a drop of BERNINA-recommended sewing machine oil. Store presser feet in a clean, dry space, preferably in a dedicated storage box, to prevent moisture exposure. Regularly inspect for signs of wear or misalignment and replace any damaged presser feet to maintain the quality.

If your BERNINA presser foot isn't attaching properly, start by ensuring it's compatible with your machine model, as an incorrect foot may not secure correctly. Inspect both the presser foot and machine shank for debris, lint, or damage that could obstruct attachment, cleaning them with a soft brush if necessary. Follow the correct attachment procedure: raise the needle and presser foot, align the foot's pin with the shank's clamp, then lower the presser foot lever until it clicks into place. If the foot feels loose or misaligned, adjustments may be needed—refer to your manual for guidance. If issues persist, the presser foot mechanism may require professional servicing, so consult our certified BERNINA technician at Top Notch
